About Us / FAQs

For details on how Global Cool operates and why, check out our FAQs below.

What is the Global Cool Foundation?

Global Cool Foundation is a UK-based charity that aims to inspire the public to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by making low carbon behaviours 'cool'.

We work with the entertainment and media industries to get the public excited about taking action to reduce their personal CO2 emissions, and with low-carbon solution providers to make it easier for people to take action.

What are Global Cool Foundation's aims?

GCF's ultimate aim is to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. We're trying to do this in two ways.

First of all, we're encouraging individuals to make any changes in their lifestyle that will make a positive difference. We want to inform people about what they can do and show that small changes can make a big difference.

Our second aim is to accelerating the roll-out of low-carbon technologies in developing countries, with a specific focus on schemes which also aid development and address poverty.

How do I support Global Cool Foundation?

Joining Global Cool is free and you can do it by clicking here

You can support us by giving us your old mobile phone (put in here how you do that)

You can also donate to Global Cool over the phone by calling 08448 792039 or online.

What happens if I join Global Cool?

We aim to inspire you to do the right thing by leading a low carbon lifestyle, and to that end we give you hints and tips on things to consider.

You'll also get a regular newsletter updating on our activity and celebrity/entertainment climate news.

We also want to encourage you to talk to us about your concerns, sharing them with other Global Cool members.

If I donate to Global Cool Foundation, can I reclaim Gift Aid?

Yes, because we are a registered charity. If you are a UK tax payer, you can reclaim the basic rate of tax (20%) by ticking the box on the form on our website. GCF will receive the tax and will use it for our work in Zambia. If you are a higher rate tax payer (ie, pay the top rate of income tax, which is 40%), you can reclaim the remaining 20% by putting it on your tax return. The tax will be refunded to you (i.e. not to GCF).

If you are not a UK tax payer, you cannot reclaim Gift Aid.

What has Global Cool Foundation's previous activity been?

Global Cool has worked with a fantastic array of organisations in the past, including:

  • Hosting a 'green' Golden Globes pre-awards party in conjunction with Leonardo Di Caprio and Global Green in LA, where KT Tunstall performed
  • Taking our message to various music festival crowds, including Fuji Rock (Japan), T in The Park, The Big Chill (both UK)
  • A live web stream of a Scissor Sisters gig at Brixton Academy, where the band encouraged the audience to reduce their carbon emissions through simple actions
  • Hosting a reception at No.10 Downing St which was attended by (then Prime Minister) Tony Blair, alongside some of our supporters - Josh Hartnett, KT Tunstall and Perry Farrell
  • Becoming the beneficiary of a Global Cool dedicated Cartier Love Bracelet
  • Producing the first 'green' International Indian Film Awards (IIFAs)

Throughout our activity, we have been honoured to receive the support of a number of high profile celebrity names from the areas of film, music and television, as well as several figures from the world of government and royalty.

Some of these include Sienna Miller, Josh Hartnett, Leonardo Di Caprio, KT Tunstall, Orlando Bloom, HRH Prince of Wales Rosario Dawson, Perry Farrell, Stephen Fry, Edward Miliband MP, then-PM Tony Blair, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Lily Cole, and many, many others.

What exactly is Global Cool's work in Zambia?

GCF has been working with a UK registered charity called Solar Aid (www.solaraid.org) and two Zambian non-government organisations (PAF and HODI) on two schemes in Zambia since March 2008.

This amazing project has focussed on micro and macro solar initiatives. The micro solar scheme involves providing training and materials to enable local entrepreneurs to create viable small businesses. The macro scheme involves installing larger solar systems to enable communities to study after dark (e.g. classes in adult literacy and health) and to generate income (e.g. through using solar power to charge mobile phones).

In 2007, the company that handles our phone and accessories recycling collected almost 4 million handsets, but estimates that up to 90 million handsets are sitting unused in the UK alone. If each one were worth £5 (which is a low estimate of a phone's worth) £450 million could be raised if they were all donated.

Why are you asking people to donate their old phones and accessories?

Mobile phone use is at an all-time high and current figures estimate that 18 million handsets are replaced in the UK every year (that's 2054 a minute). If just 1/18th of these were recycled (i.e. 1 million) that would be the equivalent of 1000 less cars on the road, in terms of emissions.

Do you accept phone accessories?

Yes - we accept chargers, accessories, boxes and manuals as well as handsets.

How can I donate my mobile phone and accessories?

There are several ways. You can simply put your unwanted mobile phone(s) and charger(s) in any suitable envelope and send to Freepost Global Cool (that's the only address needed).

Also, whether you're a Vodafone customer or not, you can hand in your unwanted mobile phone(s) and charger(s) to a Vodafone store, who are partnering Global Cool Foundation in this campaign. For help finding your nearest Vodafone shop, visit our website www.globalcool.org.

I don't live in the UK -- can I still donate my phone to you?

While we can only accept donations within the UK, we would still encourage you to recycle your old mobile phone and accessories wherever you live. Please see your local Vodafone website for how you can do this where you live.

How do I make sure my phone is cleared of all data before I donate it?

Please ensure you remove your SIM card before sending us your mobile phone as SIM cards contain personal details. Global Cool Foundation will not accept liability if SIM cards are sent. SIM cards received will be securely destroyed.

Please ensure you also remove your memory card before sending us your mobile phone. Unfortunately once we have received memory cards we are unable to return them and they will also be securely destroyed.

Although we will remove any data contained on the handset, it is highly recommended that you clear off all data on your handset, including contacts, SMS and picture messages, videos, music and any other data that may be personal to you. Global Cool Foundation cannot be held responsible for data retained on handsets.

Please refer to your handset manufacturer for further help on clearing data.

What happens to my phone and accessories once I donate it?

Donated items are sorted, checked, valued and refurbished for resale in developing countries where new handsets are unaffordable. Non-working handsets are safely recycled ensuring that as little as possible goes to landfill.

What will you do with the money from phones and accessories?

We will use it for important work in helping to prevent climate change. We will use it to:

  • further work on changing behaviours in the UK, focussing on the areas where individuals can make the greatest savings, such as the home and transport
  • further work in less developed countries

How much money do you get from my phone?

There is value to every phone that is donated. How much depends on the make, model and age of the handset but the average is £13.
