Church leaders and scientists have rarely seen eye to eye, but now they’re coming together for the common good of the planet.
Evolutionary theories have been outlawed in many schools across the US in favour of creationism, leading scientists to the conclusion that right-wing Christians put the ‘mental’ into fundamentalist.
In a new twist however, Christian leaders and eminent scientists met up in Georgia recently in a united front against global warming – and details of the meeting were today to be discussed in Washington.
“Whether God created the Earth in a millisecond or whether it evolved over billions of years, the issue we agree on is that it needs to be cared for today,” said Rich Cizik from the National Association of Evangelicals, an organisation representing around 45,000 churches.
Director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School Eric Chivian concurred.
“Scientists and evangelicals have discovered that we share a deeply felt common concern and sense of urgency about threats to life on Earth and that we must speak with one voice to protect it,” he said.
You may remember that 86 evangelical leaders signed a statement last year that vowed to abate the increased threat from human-induced climate change, however the hugely influential National Association of Evangelicals were not part of that initiative.
While the original pact stalled somewhat, there is renewed hope this holy/unholy alliance can make a difference.
