Al Gore has announced details of a 24-hour global live music event that will dwarf Live 8 and Live Aid (pictured) whilst raising awareness of climate change.
Live Earth will see seven major concerts taking place in seven major cities on 7th July 2007. Acts already on board include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi and Keane.
In addition to a huge show in London, other cities hosting events will include Shanghai, Johannesburg and Sydney with further locations to be announced in Japan, Brazil and the US. A simultaneous concert is also planned to take place in Antarctica.
“We have to get the message of urgency and hope out… In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people,” said the former US Vice President at a press conference in Los Angeles yesterday, where he was joined by actress Cameron Diaz and rapper Pharrell Williams.
“The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement.” Added Mr Gore, whose climate change baiting film, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ is tipped to scoop for two Oscars at the Academy Awards later this month.
Other acts set to appear include Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow and Black Eyed Peas.
Proceeds from the events will go towards forming a new foundation to combat climate change led by the US based pressure group, The Alliance for Climate Protection, which is currently chaired by Mr Gore.
