Jo Whiley Dragged Into Newquay Plane Row

The Greenpeace campaign to stop British Airways running cheap budget flights from London to Newquay has taken an unexpected twist involving Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley.

Following a bizarre crusade last year by stand in breakfast host Scott Mills, a deal was brokered where Newquay Airport would agree to name their departure lounge after Whiley on the proviso she turn up, unveil a plague and broadcast her show from the terminal.

Now it would appear Greenpeace are looking to broker a deal of their own. Jo Whiley presents the BBC’s coverage of the Glastonbury Festival, and Glastonbury is partners with Greenpeace. The charity is hoping to appeal to Whiley’s better nature and have her remove her name from the Cornish airport in protest.

“We’d like to catch up with Jo at this year’s festival for a pint of scrumpy to try to persuade her to take her name off the airport,” a spokesman for Greenpeace told The Independent.

But what’s in it for Jo? “If she agrees, then we promise to campaign on her behalf to have Great Western name one of their London to Newquay trains ‘The Flying Whiley’ in her honour,” they said.

There’s one stumbling block that may prove problematic when negotiating with the broadcaster: trains from London don’t actually go directly to Newquay. You have to change at Par.

Fact fans and plane spotters alike may be interested to know that a plane that flies out of Blackpool Airport is also named after the veteran broadcaster.
