Cornwall’s Eden Project today launched an all-new major international car show under the raunchy yet ethical banner, ‘The Sexy Green Car Show. The fortnight-long exhibition is showcasing the latest innovations from the world of green motoring, all within the spectacular setting of the site’s exotic biospheres.

David Meneer, Markeing Director at The Eden Project, said it was time greener cars took “centre stage” rather than merely being shown at “some dull peripheral sideshow that manufacturers feel they have to do at car shows to demonstrate how responsible and forward thinking they are.”

With transport being the third largest emitter of CO2 in the UK – and road transport predicted to make up a colossal 85% of this big chunk by 2010, despite the rise of air travel – this innovative exhibition couldn’t have come at a more critical time.

On display at the show are a host of new vehicles and technologies, including a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Vauxhall Zafira, the world’s first bio-diesel hybrid soft top from Saab and Ford’s Flexible Fuel car.

The show will also highlight new technologies, such as the agricultural development of the Zatropha plant, which is currently being pushed as a future biofuel. Unlike other plant-based fuel sources, the Zatropha is grown on marginal land and so doesn’t replace important food crops.

Additionally, visitors will be able to check their vehicle’s carbon emissions against the greenest cars. As the Eden Project points out, statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders suggest that carbon emissions from cars could be cut by 30% if all drivers switched to the most efficient cars in their class.

The Eden Project already offers incentives for green transport, with over £1m invested in cycle tracks and reduced ticket prices for those who arrive by bike or public transport. However, 86% of visitors to the popular attraction still arrive by car.

The Sexy Green Car Show runs from March 30th to April 15th at the Eden Project, Cornwall.
