Forward thinking environmentalists American Forests - who have been planting trees since 1875 - have pledged to plant 100 million more trees by 2020 in a further drive to restore forest ecosystems.
The non-profit organisation introduced to the world the Global ReLeaf programme back in 1988 with the aim of combating global warming by planting around 25 million trees in more than 500 projects.
With ever increasing CO2 emissions and the quickening depletion of forestation, American Forests has just announced the launch of Global ReLeaf 2.
“Rising global temperatures are causing a host of environmental problems including the loss last year of 10 million acres to wildfires in [the US] alone,” said the executive of the charity, Deborah Gangloff. “This is a devastating loss compounded by the fact that trees help slow global warming by sequestering carbon.”
According to Ms Gangloff there are 1.1 million acres of National Forest lands in need of restoration and wildfire seasons are increasingly intense with 2 million acres of national forest lands burned last year.
“Planting a tree is something that anyone can do, and it will make a difference,” added Ms Gangloff. “Whether it’s in your yard or in your community it’s a positive step. We all need to be a part of the solution to global warming.”
American Forests pledge to plant one tree for every dollar donated to the cause as part of the Global ReLeaf 2 initiative.
