Swashbuckling actor and eco-activist Orlando Bloom is reportedly a bit strapped for cash – owing to the escalating cost of building his environmentally-friendly house.
Global Green, an environmental organisation based in the US, is helping the Pirates of the Caribbean star remodel his London abode – with the use of recycled materials and installation of renewable energy devices.
Speaking earlier this year at a pre-Oscar party, the 30-year old talked of the difference people can make in the fight against global warming.
“It doesn’t have to be overwhelming,” said Bloom, who last summer helped Global Cool launch their campaign at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival. “There are simple things we can do.”
But according to a report on ecorazzi.com, the fastidious actor is pushing his project’s price tag through the solar-panelled roof.
“It has been a hassle, no denying it. It has come in at double the budget but I’ll admit it was me who was making all the changes!” says Bloom. “It’s powered by all the latest technology and I’ve tried to think about recycling – using as much old material as I can. It isn’t furnished yet and I’m still living out of a suitcase, but it’s coming together.”

Hope that someday this solar panels and things like “hybrid cars” don’t be so expensive so we can implement/use them all over the world!! Greetings from Argentina..Lu.-

It’s not fair that if we want to try these things, we can’t as they cost a lot of money. This shouldn’t be the case!

Its criminal the fact we have to pay more not to poison our air, its the same worldwide you have to pay more not to pollute.

Actually, it’s realistic that these things are more expensive to install…they are more expensive to make, and their basic materials are more expensive. The key is that they make energy that is free…they will pay for themselves in the long run.

Dear Mr. Bloom,
sorry, but I’m not able to understand your intentions. It is very easy to donate some money to global cool and built an energy-safing house, if you are rich.
On the other side you do fly by airplane to spend some days in Tokyo / Japan at the premiere of Pirates Of The Caribbean
and I’ve heard you did travel to the polar iceshield, only to enjoy the beautifull landscape before it will be destroyed. But by doing so, you are one of the worst destroyers…
May you please explain this to all of us. Otherwise I can’t belive in your acting.
Many greetings from Leipzig / Germany
Melanie Shroeder.
P.S.: Please ignore my spelling and/or grammar mistakes…

I don’t think that just because we cannot afford what Mr.Bloom can we can’t do other things to help prevent global warming. We don’t have to be rich to do the little things that matter. As long as you are doing the best you can with what you have then you are doing your job! But as far as the flying issue is concerned, that’s a really hard thing to NOT do. People have to do it whether it’s for their jobs, to visit family, etc…. Take for example the military. They constantly use aircraft to complete their mission to help throughout the world. It would be impossible for them to do their job without it. And as for people like Orlando Bloom their jobs are just as important as that of military members. Their jobs may require them to fly in all areas of the country to promote whatever it is that they are doing… “It’s their job.” I sat and thought about it for a little bit and I dont think I could even prevent myself from flying. If my job required me to fly I would do it.
I could go on about Global Warming, but I am going to cut it short… I think it’s great what Mr. Bloom is doing and everyone else in the world who is doing their best to help prevent Global Warming.
It starts with you! EVERY little bit helps. I do my best and it feels good to know I can make a difference!

Hey– Cheers to Orlando for doing the right thing. He could be using his money for a lot of other things but instead he is building a environmentally friendly house. We could all complain that we can’t afford to do the same thing but really instead maybe we should congratulate him on leading by example. So we can’t build an expensive house… we CAN recycle and use environmentally safe products. I think that it is great that he is doing this and by doing so he setting an example. Consider that he could be using his fame for a lot of things, but instead of using it for something that doesn’t matter he is using it to promote something that does. We can all make a difference to some degree. It is the little things that add up to something bigger… and that is the whole idea. By doing this — and any other kind of charity work for that matter– he is raising awareness and reaching people that might not even take notice if it wasn’t for his popularity. Reaching people and educating them is the only way to make a change.

Good on him!! If more people who can afford to pay the price for these houses do so, surely they will become more affordable for the rest of us (in time)

I agree Orlando Bloom is at least trying to do the right thing toward the invironment and should be supported for doing so. The fact he has to fly to countries for premiers is part of his profession. Im sure he has trees planted and covers his carbon credits.
If anything he should be thanked more for the good example he is at least trying to set.

I admire Orlando very much for trying to set such an example. I am sad however that these materials are too expensive and not readily available to everybody who would like to follow his idea of an evironmentally friendly home. Its ok for those more in the first world countries such as America who can get the materials, but stuff like that is not on the market everywhere else, in Africa for example.
There are people in some thirld world countries who do not have access to products that are environmentally friendly, and a lot of people are completely unaware of the problems facing them and probably have not even heard of global warming. I think something should be done to educate the rest of the world who have not had that priveledge yet. Maybe if everybody knew about it then they would stand as one to fix the problem!!

When considering the next generation of young people who will inherit this planet, you must find a way into their hearts. You must find a voice they will listen to. For most, it will not be the influences other generations had. It will not be the churches, parents, families, politicians. It will be the celebrities. Orlando Bloom has a following and a voice with young people. His sincere dedication to the earth will entice the next generation to listen. His actions reverberate throughout the world. He is doing what he can with what he has. And the genious behind it all is that he isn’t doing it for popularity or attention. He is doing it because he truly cares and wants others to be as passionate as he is. In our world today, without celebrities like Orlando and others, we would have no voice to the next generation. Thank God some of them have chosen to live lives that demonstrate the importance of giving back. Obviously not everyone can make the changes in lifestyle that Orlando has adopted. But he is doing what he can with what he has. And that is all we can ask of anyone. If each person can only make one small insignificant change in their lifestyle, it will make a difference. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and our planet cannot be restored in a day. But every small steps brings us that much closer.
