Global Cool’s ambitious plan to convert one billion people into planet-saving carbon citizens received a royal boost this morning as it launched its campaign across India.

On the eve of the Indian International Film Academy Weekend (or IIFAs), which launches across five Yorkshire cities today, HRH Prince Charles expressed his support for Global Cool’s coupling with IIFA.

The Prince of Wales, who for many years has provided leadership on environmental issues, said in a filmed statement: “It is clear that, through the partnership between Global Cool and the International Indian Film Academy, Indian Cinema has the potential to provide great leadership by exciting its enormous and enthusiastic audience to do their bit to save the planet.”

In addition advising the IIFAs on making the prestigious event carbon neutral, Global Cool will also be taking the opportunity to spread its planet-saving tips and messaging to IIFA’s huge global television audience of over 500 million viewers.

In preparing their Indian focussed messaging, the celebrity-backed campaign has welcomed and enjoyed ongoing support from some of the biggest names in Indian Cinema, including Amitabh Bachchan, John Abraham and Ashwariya Rai.

“Bollywood stars are some of the biggest and most influential cultural icons in the world,” said Julian Knight, Chairman and CEO of Global Cool. “We believe that Global Cool’s partnership with Bollywood will enable us to go a long way to delivering our aim of ‘cooling’ the earth by engaging one billion people to reduce their personal emissions by one tonne of CO2 each.”

Launching in India signifies Global Cool’s intention to become a genuinely global campaign, with a strong presence in all the major economies in the developed and developing world.

Anyone wanting to take part can fill in a quick online carbon workout card entitled MY CO2. In doing so, they will become part of a worldwide community that measures its progress in CO2 reductions via a global ‘Coolometer’, which is dynamically counting down the tonnes of CO2 collectively removed by individual action.
