The Global Cool partnered IIFA Weekend culminated in the spectacular IIFA Awards on Saturday night, with over 12,000 fans of Indian Cinema packing out the Sheffield Hallam FM Arena.

The star-studded event took an unprecedented environmental stance in this its eighth year, by swapping the usual red carpet for a green carpet to raise awareness of environmental issues.

In his opening address, IIFA Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan spoke of his concerns about global warming and requested of the crowd that they “do something cool today” by joining Global Cool’s campaign to tackle climate change.

Later in the event, Global Cool premiered the full length version of the spoof trailer to ‘Global Cool: The Movie’, which features performances from among others Mr Bachchan, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Hollywood actresses Sienna Miller and Heather Graham.

Many of the luminaries presenting the awards also spoke about the pressing issue of global warming, while several of Indian Cinema’s biggest names filmed exclusive messages.

Abhishek Bachchan and his new bride and winner of the most ‘glamorous female’ award Aishwarya Rai, and Hrithik Roshan - winner of ‘best male’ and ‘most glamorous male’ - all expressed their concerns about climate change backstage at the event and kindly gave their time to film exclusive messages for Global Cool and IIFA websites, which will be available to view later this week.

“India is doing well, very well,” said the new Mrs Bachchan. “But a growing economy has an environmental cost, and the affects of that cost are already being felt across India.”
