The Global Cool partnered IIFA Weekend culminated in the spectacular IIFA Awards on Saturday night, with over 12,000 fans of Indian Cinema packing out the Sheffield Hallam FM Arena.
The star-studded event took an unprecedented environmental stance in this its eighth year, by swapping the usual red carpet for a green carpet to raise awareness of environmental issues.
In his opening address, IIFA Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan spoke of his concerns about global warming and requested of the crowd that they “do something cool today” by joining Global Cool’s campaign to tackle climate change.
Later in the event, Global Cool premiered the full length version of the spoof trailer to ‘Global Cool: The Movie’, which features performances from among others Mr Bachchan, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Hollywood actresses Sienna Miller and Heather Graham.
Many of the luminaries presenting the awards also spoke about the pressing issue of global warming, while several of Indian Cinema’s biggest names filmed exclusive messages.
Abhishek Bachchan and his new bride and winner of the most ‘glamorous female’ award Aishwarya Rai, and Hrithik Roshan - winner of ‘best male’ and ‘most glamorous male’ - all expressed their concerns about climate change backstage at the event and kindly gave their time to film exclusive messages for Global Cool and IIFA websites, which will be available to view later this week.
“India is doing well, very well,” said the new Mrs Bachchan. “But a growing economy has an environmental cost, and the affects of that cost are already being felt across India.”

Since the celebrities of the world have decided to take on Global Warming - perhaps they can convince automobile industry to bring back the Electric Vehicle (EV). EV’s do not use fuel and can be charged at home. They do not emit any harmful emissions and have minimal maintainance cost.
The Automobile giants like GM and Ford crushed these cars in 2005 because they would lose money on these cars. No one would really feel the need to upgrade them because breakdowns would be rare. The Oil industry would stop making record breaking profits ($64 Billion dollars in 2006) and monopolize gas prices. Finally, we would actually bring down our CO2 level to a more manageable state.
To replace the electric car the automobile industry has been working on the Hydrogen powered car for the last 15 years.
The Electric car puts the hybrid to shame.
Want to do something about Global Warming…BRING BACK THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE!!!

I am together with Prachee of comment No.15. In addition, This danger is created by us. We are trying to get win over nature which is made by god himself. It’s not possible. Even its not possible for us to move a single leaf of plant with our energy. We should stop playing with nature. We should start planting trees seriously. After planting we must take care of it untill it grow upto some level. Except talking and dancing will not solve problame. ACTION. Everyone should work in planned programme for achieveing goal. Otherwise god will not help you even if you bribe god by giving money in temples. God’s gives us all facilities not to go to his temples regularly BUT to do his work with that facilities THEN god will come to meet you.. KEEP THIS IN MIND AND START WORKING EXCEPT WASTING MONEY AND ENERGY.

This is a very good cause being supported by the celebrities. But I think there is a need to do something on ground level as people (and I mean the common man) are still not showing an active participation in checking the global warming. But kudos to Indian celebrities who come forward to raise the awareness for the issue.
Comment by Versha Chauhan — June 19, 2007 @ 7:47 am

I already did a cool thing by joining Global-Cool. We all have to apply self-discipline to support Global-Cool thereby making our future cool.
Comment by Kapil Khanna — June 26, 2007 @ 5:58 am
Point 1: IIFA Awards were held in the UK. All the celebrities that flew in, travelled in cars, stayed at hotels, visited clubs and restaurants to mention some. In my opinion this is all unnecessary CARBON EMISSIONS. This event could have been held in India with a direct saving on the carbon emissions.
