Europe’s biggest electrical chain has called on other electronics companies to abolish the energy-inefficient standby feature.
Dixons Store Group (DSG), which owns Currys and PC World as well as the Dixons online store, is set to lead by example in phasing out the power-hungry technology from its TVs and DVD players.
Around 10% of an average household’s electricity bill can be attributed to leaving appliances on standby, costing the average home £37 a year, according to a report published in The Independent today.
“We must work together to offer more energy-efficient products, phase out, where possible, the standby function on electrical products, provide energy efficiency information to users, including energy efficient labelling for brown goods,” said John Clare, chief executive of DSG.
Keen to applaud Dixons for its greener approach, the Energy Saving Trust added:
“Phasing out standby is a positive step for consumers in the longer term. However, there are things that householders can do here and now in their homes to help minimise the environmental impact of their electronic equipment, such as turning existing appliances off stand-by when they’re not in use.”
