The British Government is set to launch a carbon calculator this week, enabling Britons to work out their carbon footprint.

Launched by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the official calculator will indicate an individual’s energy use at home, at work and when travelling.

Brits will be able to access the calculator on a government website. Individual’s can compare their scores with the UK average, as well as receive bespoke advice on how to reduce their CO2 emissions.

“Just as people are increasingly looking for advice in areas of their life like fitness, diet or lifestyle, we need to give them this support in reducing their carbon footprint,” said the Environment Secretary David Miliband. “I hope that in time it will come to be seen as the gold standard for carbon calculators.”

According to a report in The Observer, the UK average carbon footprint for the activities covered by the calculator is 4.48 tonnes – which is around half an individual’s share of the national total.

But the scheme has already been criticised by some environmentalists for leaving out certain areas of life altogether – including food consumption, public transport and public services.
