Although there’s as much chance of getting a suntan here in the UK as there is of getting decent sausage roll at a Bar Mitzvah, California is abundant with the lovely vitamin D making stuff. And never one to miss an opportunity, Google is lapping it up to power a third of its hi-tech West Coast HQ, having just completed the installation of the world’s biggest corporate campus solar farm.

With over 9,000 panels finally installed on the roof of Google’s Silicon Valley centre of operations, the vast system went live earlier this month and is already generating a hefty 1.6 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to meet the demands of around 1,000 average Californian homes.

The world’s biggest search engine has also been furthering its ambition to reach carbon neutrality by the end of the year by investing heavily in new green technology through its philanthropic arm, google.org.

The online giant has already awarded $1 million in grants, with a further $10 million to follow, and is putting its substantial financial muscle behind the research and development of vehicle-to-grid technology.

This innovative new system allows vehicles to store electricity from on board solar panels before feeding it back to the electricity grid at night.

Cars providing clean energy, whatever next… airliners churning out organic strawberries?
