An ad campaign has been launched by the Inuit of Greenland, asking Londoners to block the proposed expansion of Stansted airport.

Yesterday’s national newspapers included an ad, in the form of an open letter, urging readers to protect the Inuit’s homeland from climate change.

The ad, signed by leading Inuit representative Aqqaluk Lynge, called for Britons to act “for the sake of my people today and your people tomorrow”.

British Airports Authority, Stansted’s owner, plans to increase annual passenger numbers from 25 million to 35 million – enough to handle 75,000 additional journeys every year.

And, according to BBC News, the company cites the millions of pounds generated for the local economy as justification for expansion.

But the proposed move was rejected by Uttlesford District Council, and BAA is currently appealing the decision.

The Stop Stansted Expansion group is lobbying the inquiry, arguing that increased passenger volumes would damage the environment. The campaigners have eight days to make their case to planning inspectors currently visiting the airport.

“We aim to reveal to the inspector the extent of the impact which local people and people across the region would suffer,” said a spokeswoman. “It is also an important opportunity to highlight the impact of climate change which would result from the proposed expansion to Stansted Airport.”
