Camp for Climate Action, no not that kind of camp, saucy…

An eco-camp is to be set up at London Heathrow airport as environmentalists take direct action on climate change.

The government’s recent Climate Change Bill set a target of reducing UK emissions to 60% below 1990 levels by 2050. But at its current growth rate, aviation will exceed this projected 2050 figure all on its own.

This has prompted pressure group, Camp for Climate Action, to rally against airport expansion and increasing passenger numbers.

The activists will set up camp everywhere except the runways from 14th to 21st August. And while they’re at it, the group will also run over 100 educational workshops, covering climate change to peak oil.

Writing in today’s Guardian, Camp for Climate Action’s Claire Fauset said: “With the majority of flights being taken by the wealthiest 20% of the population, the rest of us are paying for the perks of the rich, and the cruel effects will be felt by the poorest people in the world.”

Twenty one UK airports currently have expansion plans on the table. If these get the go ahead, say Camp for Climate Action, airport capacity in the UK will increase by the equivalent of a new Heathrow every five years.
