A city based film-financing firm is setting up a fund to make the motion pictures it backs carbon neutral.

According to citywire.co.uk, the fund set up by Footprint Films, which is expected to launch in September with £10.35 million of assets, will lend the green funds to independent international film projects with budgets between £2.5 million and £10 million.

The money will be used to render the energy-intensive production of the films they make carbon neutral through the purchase of carbon credits equivalent to 1% to 2% of a project’s budget.

Although the article does not mention any efforts by the film producers to reduce or make more efficient their on-set energy use, Mark Worrall, managing director for Route Group – one of the financial institutions charged with running the fund – said: “This [fund] could be used to offset things like travel, electricity and food production. People are keen to make films green, and we’ll also be promoting things like recycling.”

Mr Worrall went on to add that backers contributing a minimum investment of £50,000 would get access to production sets and red carpet events.

Footprint Films, which brands itself as a ‘one-stop shop’ in film financing, said lending will go to projects made by commercially proven producers and will be assisted by similarly successful sales agents. The proceeds of these sales will repay any film loans.
