If the mobiles were never built in the first place that would be a lot better for the environment that recycling them. Maybe it has something to do with their profits? My recommendation would be that you combine the task of taking your old mobile phones to Vodafone, with any other tasks you may have in the town, thus justifying the contribution to your carbon footprint.
