Global Cool joins forces with fashion designer Nichole de Carle in London tonight for a party to romance the planet. We caught up with Nichole a few hours before the show to find out whether she really is Global Cool.
At the tender age of 23 and with her lingerie label only four months old, Nichole de Carle is already making a noise in the fashion world. She’s worked alongside La Perla and Just Cavalli, and appeared at the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival with Fashion TV.
But before she set up her own label, while doing stints as a design intern with Donna Karan in New York and Alexander McQueen in London, Nichole was a successful model, landing campaigns for a number of lingerie and swimwear brands. It was during this time that she worked with Blue Stocking, an up and coming boutique model agency that’s presenting tonight’s event.
Modelling, which Nichole calls “a globetrotting experience”, has always taken a back seat to her true passion, however.
“I never intended to push the modelling side – it’s always been the design side,” she says. “I loved it, but it’s not challenging enough for me. I’m too ambitious.”
Nichole is part of a new zeitgeist of ethical designers in the UK. Accordingly, she’s excited about teaming up with Global Cool tonight.
“It is a very new brand but it’s being talked about everywhere,” she says enthusiastically. “You promote what you’re doing in a really fun, approachable way – which makes people want to learn about it. People are interested in doing it but they don’t know how. But the way you explain it is exciting – and people want to get involved.”
Nichole is serious when it comes to ensuring her work is clean and green. All the silk used in the garments is fair trade, and her collection is hand-made in the UK – so it’s ethically manufactured and eliminates the use of large machinery.
“I feel very strongly about the exploitation of young women and children because I’ve been to factories abroad and I’ve seen it,” Nichole explains.
And she’s backing this up by looking at taking her brand to the next level. Her next collection will be for the Ethical Fashion Council, and she’s currently scouting for factories abroad, especially in Holland, which use ethical practices and power from renewables.
So, you heard it here first. Nichole de Carle really is Global Cool.
Tonight from 10pm at Maddox Club, 3-5 Mill Street, London W1S 2AU. For guest-list call +44 (0)20 7629887 and for more on Nichole de Carle, click here.
