Self-proclaimed ‘eco-luxury label’ Butcher Couture launched its debut collection last night in London. Buoyed on by the promise of a quick chardonnay after work, Global Cool went along to find out more.

Butcher Couture is an East London-based label, founded and owned by 26 year-old Babou Olengha. Stylish and sustainable, Butcher sources fabrics to make its garments as organic as possible. Leather and wool are certified organic, all garments are dyed naturally, the trims are made to organic standards and the threads are ‘Eco Tex’ certified, which means they are made with minimal use of chemicals. And in a nod to the waste-not-want-not ethos of the traditional butcher, labels are made from organic leather off-cuts, while swing tickets are made from recycled paper-thin pulped leather.

Butcher’s inaugural collection, ‘The Conquest’, is made up of two ranges: ‘Premium’, a limited edition collection of leather jackets, capes and coats, made from the brand’s signature organic leather; and ‘Private’, a showcase of one-off creations.

Last night’s launch at M&C Saatchi in Soho - an event made all the more eco-friendly by BASH Creations, the UK’s first eco-entertainment company - witnessed the unveiling of ‘The Elizabeth’ wedding dress, the pièce de résistance of Butcher Couture’s ’Private’ range. Designed and hand-knitted by award winning knitwear designer Jemma Sykes, the dress is made from 100% certified organic wool and dyed naturally in soft pink. And lending its support to Wear it Pink, which takes place today in the UK to raise awareness for breast cancer, Butcher Couture will donate 30% of the money raised from the private sale of the dress to the Breast Cancer Campaign.

Inspired by the concept of the food chain, Butcher Couture offers the fashionable but socially aware consumer ‘food for thought’ with luxurious, intelligent and sustainable fashion.

“Both Style and Substance are intrinsic values inherent to the Butcher brand,” says Babou. “They can’t be separated from one another as they form the basis of our competitive edge and point of differentiation. Although ‘Style’ is the driving force behind the brand, it was important to us to created a brand that also had a raison d’être, a meaning and delivered added value. Substance provided the backbone to the Butcher brand.”

So much more than yet another eco-fashion label, therefore, Butcher Couture places sustainability at the centre of its vision, challenging the consumer to engage with its philosophy of progress – both ethically as well as aesthetically.
