Guys- Lets not been too harsh to discount this effort. I understand both sides- yes planes are good, and the number of them will increase due to public demand. I don't believe biofuels are the answer either. HOWEVER- this story brings about more public interest, Branson is putting his money where his mouth is and trying to make a difference. Surely this has to be supported.

Yeah conventional biofuels are not the answer, but like he said, algae is an upcoming alternative that has staggering potential. It's free, fast growing, and won't hamper food priced, and produces way more fuel per acre then anything else.

I think the point Friends of the Earth were trying to make is that any carbon savings made by biofuels would be wiped out by the rapid growth in flights.

Richard Branson may be looking into alternative fuels but he's also pushing for the expansion of Heathrow. And even if planes running on 20 % biofuels saved carbon (and it's not certain that they do) these savings would be wiped out within a few years as aviation continues to expand.

The biofuels plane flew from London to Amsterdam - the kind of journey that can easily be done by train!
