Global Cool approached its third festival of the summer with a certain amount of trepidation, after the music press previewed T In The Park with such nerve-jangling phrases as “T In The Park is known for its special ‘atmosphere’”, and “surviving T is seen as a badge of honour”. Surviving, you say? Special atmosphere, you say? Nae bother, laddie!
Global Cool has not only been there and done that but we’ve also gone and got ourselves the t-shirt in quite spectacular fashion.
The sheer enthusiasm of the crowd to make their T In The Park experience their best weekend of the year does indeed give it an air of excitement that doesn’t really compare to any other UK festival. The music was second-to-none and everyone in this beautiful Scottish spot went all-out to make it a weekend to not just survive, but to savour, including at the Global Cool bus, which is now looking more like the world’s largest Guest Book than a bus – seriously, it is covered in signatures (but don’t worry V Festival, we’ll save you some space).
The GC bus stood proud and our lovely patch, with all the bus-related fun of giant jenga and dominoes, guitars, hammocks, free t-shirts and music, was at a nice mid-way point, both physically and metaphorically, between the funfair (with it’s ear-bleedingly loud tecnhoravehappytrancehardcore soundtrack) and the Healthy T food area (ever had an Arbroath Smokie? Go now and find one).
To get the proceedings off on the right foot the organizers hold a Fancy-dress Friday and it was hugely impressive how many people took up the challenge. At the GC bus we had quite the turnout and passing through our picket fence were Sumo wrestlers, 70’s glam-rockers Kiss, a gaggle of Marilyn Monroes (four’s a gaggle, right?), the milk carton from the Coffee and TV video by Blur (who headlined Sunday night), Little Britain’s Lou & Andy, Elvis, Mr. T and just about every superhero that’s ever graced a comic. Most spectacular of all though was The Simpsons – they whole family turned up in all their yellow glory.
As before at Download and Wireless, Global Cool weren’t only onsite to speak to the people in front of the stage. We’ve also been busy backstage chatting to some of the best bands on the bill, both new and established, asking them to share with us their journey stories and what they like to do to take advantage of their time on the bus, train or coach. Watch out for all of our interviews soon on globalcool.org and on our Facebook page.
Here’s the list of all the bands we spoke to…
Elbow, Daniel Merriweather, Noisettes, Florence & The Machine, VV Brown, Pendulum, Jason Mraz, Iglu & Hartly, Gary Go, The Hours, Mogwai, The Twang, Tommy Reilly, Go:Audio, Vagabond, Dinosaur Pile Up, The Temper Trap, Will & The People, Young Fathers, Lady Lykez, Wallis Bird, The Law, My Luminaries, The Dykeenies, In Case Of Fire, Alto Elite, Carolina Liar, Tango In The Attic, G1ft and Hip Parade. Sheesh, that’s a helluva lotta bands.
On top of all that, The Maccabees and G1ft visited the bus, and we got a ton of bands to sign Global Cool t-shirts, so watch out for competitions to win those goodies soon.
If you haven’t managed to catch us so far this summer, your last chance will be at V Festival (Chelmsford site) on 22nd and 23rd August, but even if you can’t come and see us in person, stay tuned to globalcool.org for loads of pictures, videos, interviews and competitions from our mighty summer of festivals. And remember, it’s always much more fun when you or your mates don’t have to do the driving yourselves.
