SH*T OR HIT: James Arthur and Michael Fish go head to head in the battle for Christmas Number One

Because singing with your hair brush shouldn’t cost the Earth…

James Arthur and Michael Fish

It’s Christmas Eve (woo!) so in a festive special for Sh*t or Hit, we’re giving you our run down of  the potential Christmas Number Ones of 2012. As a way to remind you not to keep your laptops, iPods and other music-listening devices on charge 24/7 we tell you whether we think these tunes are sh*t or a hit. It’s a simple game: if it’s a hit turn up the speakers to 11. And if it’s sh*t, remember to turn off your charger…

First up, it’s our X Factor crush James Arthur. His cover of Shontelle’s Impossible has been the fastest selling X Factor winner’s single to date, with almost 500,000 copies sold within a week of its release! We’ve been massive fans of the Arthunator since day one, so contrary to what he’s singing, we reckon it’s very possible he will retain the top spot come December 25! Yep, that’s a nod of approval  from us and a big  fat HIT sticker for James!

Check out the husky tones that have made him famous below…

Another contender for the Number One spot is Gabrielle Aplin. Perhaps better known as the voice of the John Lewis advert, Aplin has been catapulted to the top of the charts after guiding a very caring snowman on his journey to find his lady friend some winter woollies (turning up the style, not the heat – yay!) It’s difficult to listen to the tune without coming over all emotional, but hey, that’s what a good Christmas song is all about, and so for that reason, The Power of Love is a HIT! Listen to Gabrielle Aplin and fall in love with a snowman below..

Now time for something a bit different. Our friends at Rapanui  have released a song called The Grotto 2: The Present of Life, in aid of The Badger Trust. The video is a lot of fun (and it features an electric guitar solo from Michael Fish) so we highly recommend you give it a watch. And to make it even better you can download the song for free if you sign Brian May’s petition to save the badgers! Great cause, great video, great message…it’s got to be a HIT!

Last up, it’s the age old Christmas jig from The Pogues. Like a reliable old uncle, The Pogues always turn up around December, and they’re always ready to provide a soundtrack to your office party and aid some whacky Irish-style dance moves. Although we will always have a place in our heart for Fairytale of New York, we can’t help thinking it would be a bit SHIT if it were to hog the Number One spot, seeing as there are so many new tunes out there. We think we’ll leave The Pogues for Christmas Eve in the ‘drunk tank’…

frankensteinHere comes the science bit…

GC articles show you one of four ways (the one in bold) to live greener…

/ Be a winner (not a binner) /
/ Turn up the style (not the heat) /
/ Love the trend (not the spend) /
/ Do it in public (not the car/plane) /
