Being famous, beautiful, talented and stylish isn’t enough to cut it as a modern star. Oh boy, no. What you need now is compassion. We’re not talking kissing babies heads, walking old people across the roads and fixing bird’s wings with lollipop sticks (much though we’d love to see Hulk Hogan doing all three in a reality TV format). We’re talking about caring for the planet like the people in Grist’s List.
Grist is a cult US publication that puts an accent on the cooler side of the green movement, and two years ago they put out their first list of eco-aware celebrities. Now in 2009, the list is back. And we can tell you one thing: it’s a far cry from some dreadlocked nutjob throwing flapjacks round a cider tent. This is green for the noughties.
Grist’s Top Ten Green Celebrities:
Orlando Bloom – The hybrid-driving, solar-powered homeowner who’s worked with Global Cool
Rachel McAdams – A former Mean Girl who now runs her own brilliant eco-blog, Greenissexy.org
Adrian Grenier – Entourage’s biggest name also hosts an eco-home makeover show, Alter Eco
Emma Watson – The Harry Potter witch doesn’t just drive a hybrid broomstick – she also espouses green values in every interview
Emily and Zooey Deschanel – lauded for their work with animal protection group The Farm Sanctuary and the Human Society’s Genesis Awards
Jake Gyllenhaal – Grist dub him a ‘manic organic’, and the Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain star lives up to the name, working with Global Green USA to fight climate change
Hayden Panettiere – The Heroes cheerleader is an avid animal lover, defending whales, dolphins – and ultimately, the whole planet, of course
Scarlett Johansson – She’s designed T-shirts for Rainforest Foundation, and even ebayed a used tissue for charity – not to be sniffed at…
Natalie Portman – Campaigns to save gorillas, and has in the past even taken to singing about recycling…
Kristen Bell – The Heroes actress was voted one of PETAs Sexiest Vegetarians, and also appeared in a Gap ad urging people to vote on the behalf of trees, animals, icebergs, seas… quite a pitch, really!
