Emma Watson conjures up eco style

on in Fashion

She’s a graduate of Hogwarts, a student at top US college Brown University, and a face for Burberry. Now the unstoppable Emma Watson has added fashion designer to her blossoming CV.

The Harry Potter star’s debut collection for People Tree, a sustainable fashion label, is a mixture of easy-to-wear linen pieces, cotton vests, informal T-shirt dresses and accessories. The good news is that it’s all part of a movement to make fashion greener.

People Tree concentrate on meeting Fair Trade principles and ecologically sound production that minimises environmental impact. Organic, natural and safe materials and dyes are combined with the specialist skills of craftspeople that are paid fairly for their work.

It’s a sector of the fashion world that appealed particularly to Emma, as she told the Daily Mail: “It’s such an influential industry, so I knew that trying to help people, trying to alleviate poverty through a fashion line, could work. Fashion is a great way to empower people and give them skills; rather than give cash to charity you can help people by buying the clothes they make and supporting things they take pride in. It’s that simple.”

I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion

Emma’s creative director role included sketching out designs, working with People Tree CEO Safia Minney and the in-house design team. She’s proud of the collection — and the choices it gives young consumers.

“I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion,” she explained. “They want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.”
