People talking on the train

Global Cool is hosting a series of special events over the coming weeks to celebrate the Art of Conversation.

We’ve managed to get hold of a restored Routemaster bus and we’ll be taking it on tour around the streets of London during the event, which will include talks and activities to get people talking to each other more while using public transport.

So if you’ve ever seen the man/woman of your dreams on the bus and not had the courage to chat them up, or if you’d just like some tips on how to make those long train journeys just that little bit more adventurous, come along and join us for the Art of Conversation.

The first event, which is part of our Do It In Public campaign, will take place on Thursday July 29th and there will be three more events on the three following Thursdays (August 5th, 12th and 19th). The events run from 7-8.30pm, picking up and dropping off near Speaker’s Corner.

Please be aware that this event is now fully booked.

Here is some detailed info on each of the events…

The Art of Conversation, 29th July
Theodore Zeldin will give an introduction to his work and introduce a menu of conversation. One of the foremost thinkers of our time, Theodore Zeldin’s work with The Oxford Muse aims to pioneer new methods to improve personal, professional and intercultural relationships in ways that satisfy both private and public values, inspiring people to think more imaginatively, to cultivate their emotions through practice of the arts, to understand the past better and to have a clearer vision of the future. His has been described as “Brilliantly illuminating…” The Independent, “A master is among us” The Times and “One of the forty world figures whose ideas are likely to have a lasting relevance to the new millennium” Independent on Sunday.

The Chance Encounter, 5th August
In a tour that regards fellow passengers as strangers who are friends unmet, Dan Chilcott and The Fun Fed will focus on playful interaction. Revealing the personal stories of the people moving around London on a day to day basis and indulging in some spontaneous games will give a new perspective on public transport. A landscape of the hidden histories of London, its transport and communities will emerge, alongside burgeoning friendships and insights into your fellow travelers. Stimulating our curiosity, playfulness and emotions through games, The Fun Fed team has been described as “free-range organic fun producers.”

The Diverse Communities of London, 12th August
Professional Story Teller Alex Sommerville will be the guide on this evening of story telling a-top a routemaster bus as it drives around the city. The focus will be the real lives and real stories of diverse people who make up the community of London. Using stories from some of these traditions, Alex will take us deeper into our relationships with fellow travelers and inspire us to think in new ways.

Time to Stop and Stare, 19th August
This tour will allow passengers to look at everyday places and people in a new way. Adam Taffler, performance anthropologist, will lead the bus on a trail through busy streets, using games (like the waving game) to engage passengers with the people of London as the bus stops at traffic lights. Passengers will be encouraged to speculate about the people they see and places they visit to bring them deeper into the heart and history of the world around them. When the bus stops, performers will act out characters of London, both past and present, for the passengers to draw as Adam talks at greater length about them and their surroundings.
