The Collaborator by Gerald SeymourOur latest free book handout for Books In Public is The Collaborator by Gerald Seymour.

If you’ve read the book we’d love to know what you think (in the comments below or on Twitter using the hashtag #booksinpublic).

We also asked Gerald a few Do It In Public questions…

If you were going on a long journey on a bus or train and could pick anyone you want to be your conductor, who would you pick?
For a long journey I would want Bobby Moore as my driver/conductor.   He always knew where he was going, was unfazed by any unexpected crisis, and was a winner – so, we would get there on time and safely, and he’d be great company.

What’s your must have book for a long journey?
The ‘must have’ book for a long journey is A Tale of Two Cities: always fresh however many times I dip into it.

What about music?
My ‘must have’ music is any Irish album with a good version of the Londonderry Air included.

Are buses and trains good places to pick up ideas for your books?
Buses and trains are excellent for cobbling together ideas – I just sit and look at fellow passengers and weave stories around the faces.

If you had to set one of your books on a bus or train, what would it be about?
If I set a story on a bus or train it would involve a man coming south to London from the north, in the night and he would be an expert in his field: he could be a tracker, or an interrogator, or merely a best forgotten shadow from the past. Much more interesting that the wheels are spinning on roads or tracks than propped up in an aircraft seat.

Have you ever seen anyone reading one of your books on a bus or train and how did it make you feel?
I would not speak to anyone reading one of my books but I’d check their expression and if they looked to be nodding off I’d be disappointed, and if they were locked on the pages I might have a celebratory drink off the trolley.

Global Cool is encouraging people to go to festivals this year on public transport… what piece of advice would you give them to make the journey more fun?
The FUN part of a long journey is talking to complete strangers, no names exchanged, and swapping minor confidences when safe in the knowledge you’ll never meet again – ships that pass in the night.
