Because spoiling your other half doesn’t have to cost the Earth…

Eco Valentine's DayBy Liberty-Belle Howard

The offending Christmas articles have been trickling onto shop shelves for weeks, but now that January is firmly behind us, the high street is bursting at the seams with all things red, pink and heart shaped – just in case we forget that Valentine’s Day is around the corner.

If you’re looking for something a little more exciting than a bunch of roses and a box of chocolates this year, you’ve come to the right place: here’s our pick of the best eco-friendly Valentine’s gifts around…

Carve-Your-Own Valentine’s Day Card
Cards ultimately get thrown away, so we’re encouraged to send e-cards instead – better for the environment of course, but not very romantic! You could send cards made from recycled paper, or if you’re looking for something a bit more original, there’s always the Carve Your Own Valentine’s Card. Made from sustainable wood, it’s essentially a wooden postcard, with space for you to carve a pattern on the front and write a message on the back. It’s soft and lightweight enough for you to carve it with your keys, and it feels a lot more special and thoughtful than a normal paper card.

Ethical Jewellery
Jewellery is a fairly fail-safe option as far as Valentine’s presents go. Arabel Lebrusan have some great stuff, including these gorgeous rings, and everything is produced using sustainable materials and practices. If their products are a bit out of your price range, Traidcraft sell some cheaper ones or you could have a rummage around some vintage shops.

Lush

Lush smellies
For us, Lush products are the ultimate gift, and they’ve got some great Valentine’s gifts this year. They have a whole range of Valentine’s Day goodies As ever, all their products are made from fair-trade and sustainable ingredients, and everything is packaged using recyclable material.

Chocolate Making Kit
OK, so we know we said chocolate was boring, but making your own organic chocolates sounds like a lot of fun! The Chocolate Making Kit contains moulds and a recipe, and the chocolate in it is free of refined sugar, dairy and additives, and is full of antioxidants, so it’s practically health food!

Mini-Breaks
Valentine’s day is the perfect excuse for a Traincation. Take your loved one away for a romantic break by train this year. You could even use our Traincation Inspiration series for ideas.

And just incase you are on your lonesome on February 14 you should definitely check out this movie to make you smile…

frankensteinHere comes the science bit…

GC articles show you one of four ways (the one in bold) to live greener…

/ Be a winner (not a binner) /
/ Turn up the style (not the heat) /
/ Love the trend (not the spend) /
/ Do it in public (not the car/plane) /
