How to be more noticable on a bicycle (featuring a talking bike bell)

Cycling

Brought to you by Going Going Bike

Some weeks back we featured a blog on what was the best way to respond to a driver who yells at you when you are out cycling. Now we don’t want to be seen as promoting bad behaviour from a cyclist in any way but a US firm is marketing a mounted bike bell that allows voice message playback at a touch of a button.

The bell, which is called “On your Left”, allows you to record a message (up to 20 secs worth) and then plays it back from the speakers built into the device. Sound levels from the speakers can hit 80 decibels.

Safety tool
This of course opens the possibility of some choice retorts or expletives being recorded, though strictly speaking the bell is marketed as a safety tool, particularly for kids who do not announce “on your left” when passing a car, pedestrian or another cyclist (this is the US remember). Apart from playing the recorded message back, the device also has a standard bike bell sound programmed in.

Multiple messages
A nice touch in any future upgrade of “On your Left” could be multiple messages instead of just one recorded item. My particular favourite is “there is no such thing as road tax”, which I never fail to come out with when a driver yells at me that cyclists should pay road tax.
