So that’s enough about us

on in Stuff

So over the past couple of months we’ve shown you what we can do with 100,000 overlooked mobile phones. We’ve also introduced you to swishing and what happens when the contents of a few celebrity wardrobes collide with a bunch of fashion fanatical competition winners.

But apart from the positive environmental impact of all them phones and frocks not ending up in landfill (and of course one lucky winner walking off with one of Paris Hilton’s £3,500 hand-me-downs) what else is Global Cool doing to, you know… save the planet?

Enter Zambia – and for those who fluffed their geography GCSE (including this lowly writer), it’s in Africa wedged between Zimbabwe and the Congo, two thirds of its population live in absolute poverty, and 17 percent of its people are HIV positive. Add to that, the country is heavily reliant on kerosene as a fuel source, which apart from smelling like a rundown paint factory causes severe respiratory diseases and leaves an incredibly big carbon footprint.

So what can Global Cool do about it… send them some dresses and knackered mobiles? No, the Global Cool Foundation (the bit where all the money goes to) has partnered with Solar Aid to help provide those most in need with affordable, sustainable and clean energy that will have big environmental, health and economic benefits.

As its name suggests, Solar Aid works with solar energy and we’re currently working with them to install 100 solar panels in off-grid schools and community buildings. Through Solar Aid we’re also supporting local entrepreneurs to build and sell solar chargers that can power radios, mobile phones and solar lamps.

So that’s what we’ve been up to behind the scenes and we just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you that have helped us so far. We’ve still got a long way to go but we intend on having a lot of fun on the way and hope you’ll stick around for the ride.

Oh yeah, and if you’ve got a neglected phone lurking at the back of a drawer then please send it to us via Freepost, Global Cool or drop it in at your nearest Vodafone store.

Thanks again
