You always wanted to know a little more about Iran, right? Keeping you occupied while you try to do it in public, Kader Abdolah’s international bestseller is an exciting tale that you can thank your magic lamp for. Plus, you’ll come away with some fascinating facts to drop into conversation at your next dinner party.
What’s all the fuss?
The House of the Mosque tells the story of a house that holds the memories and secrets of one wealthy Iranian family for eight generations. We follow its varied inhabitants as their lives are transformed through one of Iran’s most turbulent periods. There are marriages, births and deaths but disaster only truly unfolds when Ayatollah Khomeini comes to power in the 1979 Revolution.
Not sounding like a light read for those early chilly mornings? It’s not as gloomy as it sounds. Thanks to the way the story is told, mystical verse and fable-like animals are woven into the narrative and lead to an incredibly warming tale of strength against adversity.
Fancy getting your hands on a copy? As usual, we’re giving it away to one lucky reader! Just tell us what you’re reading on the bus or train by 11am on October 4 by leaving your recommendations in the comments box below. Good Luck!

If you enjoy true tales of braver people than you or I, who’ve escaped the rat race to live in ramshackle dwellings in remote regions… then you’ll love it! A good story, well told and interesting.
