Global Cool’s resident bookworm Nicki brings you her favourite reads, inspiring you to ditch the car and the stress of the morning commute and bury your head in a great book on the bus or train instead…

Start Something That Matters

With winter dragging on it can be tough to feel inspired to do anything! If you’re thinking of starting something new or want to do your bit (however big or small) to help others, then this book will give you the boost you need and the answers on how to do it! So this week Global Cool recommends Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie…

Blake Mycoskie founded TOMS back in 2006 – a global brand which promises to give a pair of shoes to someone in need for every pair sold (and they look pretty good too). Start Something That Matters is Mycoskie’s personal account on how and why he set up TOMS and what other people and organisations have done to help – with many amusing annecdotes along the way!

A light-hearted and easy read, Start Something That Matters recalls how one simple idea went on to help thousands of people and establish a growing business. In just a few simple steps, Blake Mycoskie gives hints and tips to reader on how to succeed in business and help others. The on-going story of TOMS is interspersed with random funny tales and hilarious characters, making this personable read very hard to put down.

Tell me more…
The ‘One for One’ pledge of TOMS (one pair of shoes for someone in need with every pair you buy) even stands with this book – “with every book you purchase, a new book will be provided to a child in need“. So even with the simple act of buying this book you are making a difference, which is pretty gosh darn great. On top of that, your commute will be all the more enjoyable and you might even be inspired to try something new!

Blake Mycoskie uses his own photos and journal notes to break up the text (who doesn’t love a good picture book really?). It’s a tale of hard journeys, eventual happy endings, filled with inspirational quotes and unbelievable stories to boot - Start Something That Matters really does have it all!

THIS COMPETITION HAS NOW CLOSED – THANKS FOR ALL THE ENTRIES AND WELL DONE TO CAROL PHILE, WHOSE ANSWER WAS CHOSEN AT RANDOM TO WIN THE PRIZE

frankensteinHere comes the science bit…

Living green doesn’t have to mean growing dreadlocks and becoming an eco-warrior. At Global Cool we reckon a greener life is still a fun one. We’ve found four simple ways you can be greener without sacrificing the things you love. All our articles highlight one way (the one in bold below) to start being greener…

1. Be a winner, not a binner (aka recycling and reusing stuff)
2. Turn up the style, not the heat (aka using less energy at home)
3. Love the trend, not the spend (aka buying stuff that doesn’t harm the planet)
4. Do it in public (aka ditching the car and plane when you can)
