Whether you’re a responsible citizen doing their bit to help our pear-shaped economy, or just generally a bit of a tight arse – a few nuggets of money saving knowledge are the must-have accessory for bloke talk in the pub in 2010.
And if bloke talk in the pub isn’t your cup of tea (shouldn’t that be pint of Fosters?), just think how much more dosh you’d have to spend on clothes/shoes/music/movies/make-up (delete as appropriate) if you stopped throwing it down the drain on artificial heat to keep your (virtually) naked body warm during the cold months.
Here are our top tips for saving energy at home and loadsamoney this winter…
1. Wrap up warm in a woolly jumper – it’s winter in England, not summer in Ibiza. Stop prancing around in your shorts and t-shirt and stick a jumper on so that you can turn down your heating. It will save you $$$
Turning down your thermostat by just one degree can reduce your heating bill by 1 per cent.
2. If your thermostat has temperature settings, try reduce your heating to 18 Degrees. And if you think that feels a tad chilly, check out these ideas for how you can stay warm and look great this winter. If you have valves on your radiators, why not turn off the radiators in rooms that you don’t use very often. If you’re unsure as to whether your thermostat is working, here are some great ideas for how to check it. If you live in rented accommodation and you don’t know where your thermostat is, ask your landlord to show you where to find it and how to use it.
3. If it’s so cold that you must leave your heating on at night, turn down your thermostat by 5-10 degrees at night, this will save you 5-10 per cent on your bill. If you use your timer to warm the house before you wake up or come home from work, try reducing the amount of time you give the house to get toasty by just 5-10 minutes. Don’t be fooled in to thinking it’s better to run your heating all day at a lower temperature rather than turning it on and off. This will not save you money.
4. Take this home energy check – it could save you up to £250 per year; that’s a lot of Pina Coladas for when you actually are sat on the beach in Ibiza.
5. Switch to paperless billing – many energy suppliers offer discounts to customers who get their bills by email. Plus, less post will mean more room for those pizza takeaway menus to sit nice and comfy on your doormat.
6. Stop pouring your money down the drain, literally! The less water you waste, the less energy you’ll need to heat it up. Water great idea! (Sincere apologies). Here are some proper serious tips without any terrible jokes in them.
7. DIY it – no not that (although that’s a good way to stay warm without the need for central heating too)! But what we really mean is generating your own energy. It would be just like The Good Life, only without the bad jumpers and the MILFs. Or if that’s a step too far and the lack of MILFs puts you off, maybe just make a few simple home improvements instead.
8. Get an energy saving grant from the government to improve your home energy efficiency. Money from the government – and you don’t even need to have six illegitimate kids to get your hands on it! What’s not to like about that?
