We’re always on the look out for the good, the bad and the ugly in celebsville. But unlike most of the celebrity rags, we’re more concerned with who’s using their canvas bag at the supermarket than who’s been spending a little bit too much quality time with the botox needle. And what better way to put them to rights than by playing our favourite TV show, Snog Marry Avoid…

Snog
London is aiming to transform its green credentials as everything from the London bus to Tower Bridge is given an eco makeover for the Olympics. Sponsors Adidas announced that all participants (staff, volunteers and torchbearers) will wear clothing made from recycled materials, there are plans for special recycled shoes and Global Cool girl Stella McCartney is designing the athletes’ outfits. Looks like Usain Bolt and co will be going for green as well as gold!

Marry
Hollywood super-producer James Cameron, a strong advocate of sustainability, is making sure that the upcoming Avatar sequels are both extraordinarily eco-friendly. According to reports, Cameron’s production company has made MBS Media Campus its home. The facility has an aggressive water conservation programme, eco-friendly paints and cleaning products, sustainable cafe and a number of programmes to promote greener transportation… However, Cameron is going further and paying $5 million in improvements, which will include solar panels that will provide all of the needed electricity for both sequels.

Avoid
Call us obvious, call us predictable, but we’re going to go with the flow and the stick the boot into Ryan Giggs again this week. The Manchester United footballer is now alleged to have been having an eight-year affair with his brother’s wife. A player in every sense of the word, it would seem. Leaving aside the obvious moral shortcomings (we’ll leave Mrs Giggs to cast judgment there) we’d once again like to point out that with all the extra texting, driving between shag fests and buying extra presentes to keep the other half sweet, extra marital affairs are bad for the planet as well as your emotional sanity. As the cast of Grange Hill once said, just say no, kids!

Disagree? Well tell is in the comments then for God’s sake…

Our top 20 green celebrities of the last 12 months...

Welcome to our countdown of the 20 coolest green celebrities of 2010, starting today with numbers 20 to 11 and finishing tomorrow with the top 10…

11. Mark Ronson
This Grammy award winning musician and DJ has a whole host of talents up his sleeve and it turns out that one of them is riding a bike. As well as releasing The Bike Song, Ronson also helped to promote cycling around London.

12. Tim Minchin
Music and comedy are not always the easiest of bedfellows, not unless you like Victoria Wood anyway. Aussie songsmith Minchin, however, has somehow managed to create comedy out of a song about the importance of helping the environment by not using plastic bags at the supermarket. Hats off!

13. Questlove
As if making music with the likes of Christina Aguilera and Jay-Z isn’t enough, Questlove and The Roots added to their uber cool credentials by playing a gig at Earth Day earlier this year.

14. Guy Ritchie
OK, so his films are so naff that even Madonna doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore, but at least everyone’s least favourite mockney has been getting on his bike, quite literally, this year.

15. James Cameron
No-one has done more for blue people, except maybe The Smurfs, and the Titanic director made up for his previous attempts to undermine green travel (sinking a massive ship) by putting sustainable living at the heart of Avatar’s, ahem, plot. And if you thought the film was shit then don’t despair – he also planted a load of trees too.

16. Lance Armstrong
Here’s a man who travelled around France seven times using just his own leg power – now it doesn’t get much greener than that! The Tour de France legend is also a massive supporter of electric cars.

17. Liz Hurley
Liz might have been higher in this list but for recent reports of romance with Australia’s leading pie advertiser Shane Warne. Nevertheless, Hugh Grant’s ex has still got us in a spin (I thank you) with her support for organic farming. Groovy, baby!

18. Billy Zane
Another former proponent of sinking ships, we’ve also decided to forgive Billy for his role in Titanic (and for managing to get a piece of Kelly Brook!) due to his cycling exploits (N.B. Celebs – in case you hadn’t already noticed, if you hop on a bike some time in 2011 you’ve got a pretty good chance of making this list next year).

19. Edith Bowman
You’ll never guess what Radio 1′ Edith’s been up to… that’s right, cycling. Basically, the lesson here is that if you didn’t take up cycling in 2010 then you’re a massive loser. End of.

20. Benoit Assou-Ekotto
Of course, if cycling isn’t your thing, there’s always the Tube. Football hating footballer Benoit Assou-Ekotto loves to get about on it when he’s not watching his manager Harry Redknapp dispatch tactical instructions in a series of carefully choreographed coded twitches.

This week's teacher's pet is Avatar director James Cameron...

By Lauren Moore

This week’s entrant to the School of Cool is James Cameron…

So who is he?
One of the most famous writers and directors in Hollywood, who first gained notoriety for The Terminator back in 1984, and is responsible for the massive films, Titanic and Avatar.

Impressive. What else do I need to know?
He is also an expert on underwater filming and remote submersibles, diving himself to film scenes of the Titanic which were later used in the film. His expertise even gained him an honorary degree as Doctor of the University of Southampton in 2004.

So he’s a cool guy, but why’s he a Global Cool guy?
The underlying message of Avatar is that we need to more to look after our world. And Cameron certainly practices what he preaches. On 22 April this year, he launched his scheme to plant 1,000,000 trees to offset the energy used while making Avatar. Trees will be planted in 15 countries and only trees native to the region will be planted.

James has also recently voiced his concern over the recent BP oil spill, getting together a group of 23 experts and offering their knowledge on how to stop the oil spill. He also recently co-hosted the Eco Warrior Training competition alongside Sigourney Weaver in the US where high school students had to demonstrate how they could apply environmental lessons they had learnt from Avatar to their life.

If you want to follow in James Cameron’s footsteps why not consider a Traincation or Do It In Public!

Here’s some of his finest work…

With Avatar breaking box office records, Global Cool asks: is there a downside to the 3D movie revolution?

With Avatar breaking box office records, Global Cool asks: is there a downside to the 3D movie revolution?

While ten-foot tall, blue-skinned cat people on the forest planet of Pandora already seem to have got the recycling message, have you ever wondered about us earth-bound grunts?

If you’ve missed James Cameron’s epic 3D movie Avatar, you’re in a small minority. Nominated for nine Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards and already the highest-grossing movie of all time, it’s a sweeping space fantasy that pits wasteful humans against a race of noble and eco-conscious aliens on a distant planet.

Although critics have pointed out that the movie relies on the gimmickry of 3D to get its message across, it’s still stupendous: viewers are bobbing and weaving in their theatre seats with the realism of the movie. What they’re wearing has come under scrutiny: not their popcorn-bobbled sweaters, but the polarized specs that enable the full 3D experience.

A report for USA today calculated that in the first 46 days of screenings, over 42.1 million people donned their 3D goggles. Put end to end, they’d reach from London to Chicago.

So what happens when the lights come up and the dazed moviegoers stumble home, shedding flakes of popcorn over the carpet?

Well, according to sources in the companies that make them, the 3D glasses are greener than you think. Odeon and UCI, the largest players in the UK cinema scene, use RealD glasses after signing a deal back in 2007, and Vue cinemas followed them in 2009.

Real D’s environmental policy states that glasses are returned to head office, sent back by cinemas – or guilty, light-fingered 3D fans – and washed so they can be sent back out again for reuse. Each pair is so tough that they can be washed up to 500 times before deteriorating, and if they sustain damage they’re melted down and recycled.

So, banish those nightmares of landfill sites brimming with black plastic spectacles. It turns out that the 3D revolution isn’t as bad as all that. And if you get home from Pandora and realise you’re still packing a pair of polarized space goggles in your pocket – send them straight back to Real D’s European office. The Naavi would be proud…
