SPORT IN PUBLIC: Get your Snickers in a twist on the bus with Rio, Balotelli and ‘Arry

Welcome to our weekly round-up of sporting clips. Like Sir Alex Ferguson on a scouting mission, we’ve carefully handpicked these videos to ensure success. Our aim is to get you out of the car and going to sporting events on public transport. All you have to do is leave the car keys at home, fire up your internet enabled devise and kick back on the bus and train while these clips keep you entertained…

We start by reflecting on an ugly moment. No, we’re talking about the fact Wayne Rooney was voted the manliest footballer this week. We’re reflecting on last week’s Super Duper Mega Amazing Sunday (trademark Sky Sports) game between Manchester City and Spurs. Sport In Public can’t help thinking that it’s a shame such a great match will be remembered for Mario Balotelli using Scott Parker’s head as a door mat. Still, we’ve seen worse…

More ugliness on Twitter this week, where Joey Barton was warned about predicting football matches by the FA. To be honest, Sport In Public found this less offensive than Rio Ferdiand’s ill-judged Snickers adverts, in which the Manchester United star promoted the popular chocolate-based snack (other brands are available) via a series of bizarre tweets. Cue thousands of his followers questioning whether Rio really needs to sell his soul like that, given that footballers generally tend to be doing pretty well for themselves in the salary stakes. The ASA are not too happy either. Sport In Public decided it was a good opportunity to remind everyone that footballers and advertising just don’t mix…

Another thing that doesn’t appear to mix these days is Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal fans. In Super Duper Mega Awesome Sunday’s other extravaganza Sport In Public couldn’t help notice that Manchester United’s victory exposed the fact that the chemistry between Arsene and his supporters has now reached Christine Bleakley/Adrian Chiles depths. We’ve all been there…

We all wait with baited breath to see if football can rise above its tribalistic ways and get through the QPR v Chelsea FA Cup tie this weekend without any unsavoury Anton Ferdinand/John Terry related chanting/skirmishes. The Hoops have hardly helped matters by signing Taye Taiwo, a player who was banned from the French League for leading supporters in a homophobic chant. All this leaves Sport In Public surprisingly nostalgic for the more innocent crowd baiting of everyone’s least favourite fake tan – former Hull boss Phil Brown…

Tottenham have had to train without Harry Redknapp this, who has been missing due to one or two financial difficulties. No doubt Spurs fans will be less concerned about this than they were about the missing inches on the bottom of Jermain Defoe’s legs against Manchester City. A couple of inches taller and Redknapp’s boys might still have been title contenders. It was all tragically reminiscent of a certain Gazza miss…

Global Cool wants you to lead a green and happy life. This article can help you to be green by:

1. Using public transport rather than the car to get to whatever sporting event you’re attending. You wouldn’t be able to watch all these videos while you drive, now would you? Plan your journey here.
2. Even better… walk or cycle if it’s convenient.
3. Whatever device you’re using to watch those videos, make sure you only leave it plugged in for as long as it takes to charge, not over night.
4. If you’re more of an arm chair fan make sure you turn the TV fully off after the action has finished. Standby is for losers.

After all the drama and giantkilling (does Wigan really count as “giants”?) last week it’s back to business as usual this weekend. As ever, Sport In Public is here to help you enjoy your journey to the big game by public transport. Here are all the stories that have had the internet shouting as loudly and angrily as ever over the last seven days, with a little related video entertainment to help you Do It In Public…

The glorious goalscoring return of Thierry Henry to Arsenal colours on Monday night apparently led to a spontaneous outbreak of men turning gay on Twitter (although not in Ireland, we assume). If Henry’s Nicolas Anelka-esque beard and bald head combo had you reassessing your sexual priorities, here’s a little something to get you going. Just try not to get too, er, excited, you are meant to be reading this on a bus or train after all…

Speaking of man on man love, after rumours to the contrary, Chelsea boss Andre Villas Boas has spoken out this week to say he and Frank Lampard have a great relationship. Here’s a reminder of why AVB is so keen not to upset Mr Christine Bleakley…

The ugly side of the game reared its ugly head again last weekend with bad tackles from Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany and Liverpool’s Glen Johnsen. Despite all the furore and debate about two-footed challenges, we can definitely all agree that neither was as bad as this…

Wayne Rooney denied trying to get Kompany sent off for that tackle during the FA Cup tie between the two Manchester clubs. We can only assume that the hand he was waving in the referee’s direction was merely a gentle reminder to remember to buy a lottery ticket. Let’s remind ourselves that underneath the silly fake hair and other Rooney nonsense, lies a very talented footballer, as this clip of him as a whipper snapper shows…

Other names in the football news this week include Carlos Tevez and Paul Scholes. You won’t be surprised to hear neither was making headlines for the ability to spontaneously turn previous straight men into homosexuals. The former was involved in yet more Milan-based transfer speculation, whilst the latter was doing an impression of a man who had never kicked a football before in his life. Perhaps Scholes has been taking tips from Andy Carroll, who was also the subject of transfer speculation linking him with a return to Newcastle. Let’s remind ourselves why Kop fans are so keen to keep hold of him…

Another man doing an impression was Ipswich manager Paul Jewell, whose comments about a female assistant referee were straight from the Richard Keys and Andy Gray text book. Perhaps Jewell needs a reminder that quite a lot of male officials make terrible decisions too…

And finally, Mark Hughes has replaced Neil Warnock at QPR. Here’s why we’ll miss the man they (not so affectionately) call Colin Wanker…

Everyone’s going Madchester this week. The Stone Roses are reforming, and there’s the small matter of the Manchester derby this weekend. If you’re making the journey up to Lancashire – or anywhere else to take in some footy this weekend – make sure you Do It In Public on the way. Taking public transport not only benefit’s the planet, but you as well, as the list of entertaining football delights below for you to enjoy on the train and bus aptly demonstrates…

Clips

We’ve all been waiting for it, and it’s finally here. Paul Gascoigne has released a book into the world. Everyone, and we mean everyone, knows about Gazza’s exploits, but what we don’t know is the other side of the story, and this book attempts to clear that up for us. A great read and really worth your effort, especially whilst you’re Doing It In Public.

Apps
Well, we had to write about it eventually. Everyone’s favourite football game is available as an app. It’s Pro Evolution, and it’s thumb-crampingly addictive. You can act out your favourite games, whilst you’re on your way to the game – but obviously not if you’re driving.

Twitter
And to round off, it’s our Twitter recommendation. Each week we excavate large areas of the micro-blogging caverns, in order to bring make the raw material tweets you need to power yourself to the game. We’ve picked up on Football Speak. It’s fun, informative, and they share some great links. They’re a personal favourite of ours, and should be of yours.

Hurray! England have qualified for Euro 2012 – all they need to do now is make sure they don’t follow in the footsteps of our rugby players. With Wayne Rooney in the squad that shouldn’t be too much of a problem!

We hope you’re looking forward to a full weekend of football – we are – and we hope you’re supporting your local team! What’ll really make us love you though is if you’re Doing It In Public on the way. If so, then you’ve got all these things to treat yourself with, if not, well, you’re kinda missing out…

We know your mothers shouted at your for sitting too close to the telly, but we urged you to shift just a fraction closer and check out our videos. First up – we know Rooney’s kick was bad, but compared to these…

Time is yours when you’re sat on that bus, and even though Blackberry may be as reliable as a carrier pigeon, we’re sure you’ll find a way to use this app. It’s called My Madrid, and even if you’re not a fan of the Spanish club, that shouldn’t deter you from this glorious app. It’s a fantastic example of how all great football apps should be. Two of its features that spring to mind are online ticket buying and 3D goal animations; come on, don’t pretend you’re not impressed.

Twitter
Whenever we doubt the benefit of this modern age we live in we just need to turn to Twitter to remind us of its majesty. More importantly, if we ever forget why we’re taking the bus to the game on a Saturday morning, scrolling down the Twitter feed irradiates those thoughts. This week we ask you to check out Best Football Goals. These guys are so much more than they appear, posting not only great goals, but a wealth of other great videos too.

Books
Finally this week we bring you a book in which you can bury yourself on the way to a match. Personally, I find there’s nothing better than learning all about the hidden side of football, something you can’t do while driving! Now this fella may have tried to defend Rooney – which perhaps was a bit stupid – but not one can deny the genius of Alex Ferguson. You now have the privilege of reading his official story from his time with Manchester United. Bathe is the highs and lows of one of footballs most successful characters.

SPORT IN PUBLIC: On the buses with Carlos Tevez, a drunken ref and some dirty tackles

As always, my editor has asked me to write Something For The Weekend, a feature I do every week. But for some reason I decided that, today, I just didn’t fancy it and refused. When my assistant editor asked me why on earth I’d acted in such a childish way, I said I was confused and that I didn’t understand that my editor actually wanted me to do my job and write something.

Now, I’m obviously lying, because if I had done that I would have been thrown so far from the Global Cool offices that I’d probably have landed in the Manchester City ground. But fear not, because even if Carlos Tevez has put you off the beautiful game, we’ve compiled a collection of treats that’ll make you fall back in love.

The only problem with the goodies we’ve got together is that you can’t use any of them while you’re driving – nope – you’re gonna have to Do It In Public on the way to game in order to get the most out of them…

You know that guy on Facebook who always updates their status with really pointless things? Like, “just fed the cat” or “I hate vegetables!” Well, that’s what Twitter is like for celebs. It’s brilliant. And if you want the best from Twitter then make sure you follow our page – @SportInPublic. However, if it’s more you want then it’s our duty to supply. DirtyTackle are tweeting veterans. They’re pros at this game and that’s why they’re our tweeting tip of the week. For, quite literally, up to the minute info, check them out!

Books
Until Tevez releases his autobiography entitled something like Why I Did It or My Side Of The Story, we’ve felt the need to provide you with something else to read. The reason? Well, besides the fact that we adore football literature here at Global Cool, it’s also an excellent pass time on those commutes to the game – something you can’t do behind the wheel. This week, we’re all over the Book Of Football Records. It’s got literally everything you can think of. As well as being completely up to date, it’s also bursting with some surprises – so go out and treat yourself.

Apps
And last but never least, it’s apps! When you’ve explored and devoured all our other suggestion, get yourself this app and you you may end up missing the game you’ll be so addicted. We all love fantasy football, right? There’s something in that game that gets us so competitive. Well, now with Yahoo Fantasy Football you can beat all your mates. Not only does this app let you know what points you’re accumilating as and when they come in, but also where you could be missing out! It’s wonderful, and you need it!

SPORT IN PUBLIC: On the buses with Fergie, Wenger and something to make Fernando Torres look like less of a plonker

Another week goes by and it’s time to move on from last week and focus on the future…apart from Fernando Torres‘ miss, we’re still gawping at that one!

Ivan Gazidis announced on Tuesday that Arsene Wenger won’t be getting the boot (despite the appalling start to the season) but will that change if Bolton walk all over Arsenal this weekend?

Something For The Weekend wants to get you off of that sofa and out to the games. But rather than sitting in traffic – missing the first 15 minutes because you arrived too late and missing the last in order to beat the queues – we order you to Do It In Public on the way! And, what’s more, to prove to you how much better public transport really is, we’ve compiled a little collection of travelling treats you could use behind the wheel…

We may have to open up a Global Cool football library soon – what with all the excellent literature we’re pumping into the world. This week we’re backing Football – Bloody Hell! by Patrick Barclay – a biography of Sir Alex Ferguson. It may have been released a little while ago, but we can’t help but feel we need to re-mention this gem. But if an Alex Ferguson memoir isn’t your cup of tea (and God knows for some it isn’t) then fear not. The Sun have very kindly put all of last weekend’s goals into a neat little video for us – check it out here.

Twitter
As usual we’ve been busy cutting through the micro-blogging foliage of the Twitter jungle in order to bring back some rare tweeters from undiscovered depths. We fear, however, that this week’s discovery may cause a disruption to the sporting world on the scale that King Kong did to science. You may not have thought it but Piers Morgan (yeah, that guy who’s best friends with Susan Boyle) is a footballing tweetoholic. Morgan slags off almost every player you can think of – unless they play for his beloved Arsenal. But as he tweets, Lord Alan Sugar retaliates (defending rivals Spurs) and the couple seem to be – dare we say it – flirting via the cyber (shudders). Check them out and you’ll see what we mean. Also, don’t forget to follow our own twitter feed @SportInPublic.

Last but not least, it’s Apps. We know how it feels to be on the bus, having finished your book and and tweeted at every single one of your followers, and you feel like you’ve run out of things to do. Well, that’s where we come in, declaring “fear not! We have MORE goodies for you”. Yes, our apps keep your brain happy and your neck bent. We want you to check out Master Control from Nike Football +. Developed by Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola it teaches you training techniques and drills, with tips from the coach along the way. It really is the top app for anyone who’s got their eyes set on Wembley.

Stop watching that Rugby World Cup! It’s Friday and that means spherical balls not egg-shaped ones! We don’t care if England are playing because we’re all about the footie here at Global Cool. With Man United taking on Chelsea in the big game on Sunday, this weekend is set to be just as wonderful as the last – and we cannot encourage you enough to get off that sofa and go support your local teams.

We do have one small request, and that’s to Do It In Public on your way to the match – just Benoit Assou-Ekotto does (no, really)! This week, as always, we’ve compiled a small collection of what we think are the best things to keep you busy while you’re riding that bus/train

We’ve dug out a vintage app for you here, and a format many of you may well be familiar with, it’s Championship Manager 1980s Legends. Play your favourite game on the old setting, with all your best-loved stars from the 80s. As if Championship Manager wasn’t addictive enough already, now we can sign Gary Lineker and Ian Rush!

Books/Articles
My oh my, we’ve a treat for you this week. My Story by Paul Scholes is due out at the end of the month. Grab hold of this piece of footballing literature and you’ll have all the other passengers on your train green – or ginger (apologises) – with envy. We’re hoping it will reveal why he never learnt how to tackle and why he retired from international games so damn early! But if the Manchester United legend doesn’t do it for you, then check out how The Telegraph feels the new signings have been fairing so far.

Oh, Twitter, how we love you. Can you remember the days before Twitter? Footballers would think something, keep it to themselves, and the world would go on as normal. Now, the second a thought pops into Joey Barton or Rio Ferdinand’s head – bang! – it’s on Twitter. No-one is safe (and don‘t forget to check out our own page - SportInPublic). We’ve got to give a Global Cool shout out to Robbie Savage, who literally cannot stop Tweeting. But this week we’re plugging Motivational Quotes @Sports_Greats; who churn out wise words from George Best to Muhammad Ali. No, it isn’t just football, but the fact that these guys churn out words of timeless wisdom almost hourly is worth our attention, and surely worth yours as well.

Here at Global Cool we really love cycling. So much so, our male editor has stupidly agreed to dress us as Lady Gaga and cycle through Hyde Park if we can hit 4,000 followers on our Global_Cool Twitter account by the end of September. He’s even going to let us film the whole thing so that you can all share in the humiliation. But we need your help if we’re going to make it happen. Well, there’s no time more exciting than the last week of the transfer market. We don’t know about you, but we’re still catching our breath! Is your team doomed to stagnate or have they been injected with a new lease of life? Only time will tell. And time is what you’ve got (when you’re Doing It In Public)!

We’re so proud of what we’ve got for you this week we almost want to keep it all for ourselves. But damn it, at Global Cool we’re here to serve you, and that’s why you’re the luckiest readers in the world. There are no Premier League or Championship matches this weekend because of the international games but, hey why not use that as an opportunity to get out and support a lower league team? Here’s a whole Arsenal – whey! – of things for you to do while you get to the game on the train or bus…

The transfer window may have slammed shut now, but let’s face it, it won’t be long before the rumours about who’ll be on the move in January get going. If you can’t wait that long and are already having withdrawal symptoms, get your hands (or thumbs) on Football Rumours & Transfers by BrightAl. Get breaking transfer news for all the European clubs as and when it happens and you can even chat to other fans. Using this will be a lot easier than shouting to fans from your car window, which is what you’ll be doing if you’re not on public transport.

With the transfer window closed, there’s no better time to indulge in Sky Sports‘ Football Yearbook 2011-2012 – or the bible as we like to call it. It’s out now in its 42nd Edition and there’s nothing more apt to read on the way to the game. But as if that wasn’t enough, you can also check out the Independent’s List of the Worst Excuses In Sport. Arsene Wenger is pretty renowned for defending his team to the bitter end, but some of these sporting excuses really take the biscuit.

There’s no better source than Twitter to find out what you’re favourite footballer is having for breakfast, but it’s also a pretty good resource for all the latest transfer rumours and the hottest gossip. And who’s more in the know than the agents, eh? Well, Peter Morrison is our tweeting tip this week as his Twitter page is a footballing gold mine! You can find him @FootballAgentPM. Also check out @FootballAgent46 – another fountain of knowledge. You’re spotlit for choice, but remember you can only follow if your eyes are glued to your phones, and not the road.

To celebrate (sorry Arsenal and Tottenham fans) last weekend’s goal-fest here are some other very one-sided games for you to enjoy on the train/bus, including a classic England from the Sven Goran Eriksson game that celebrated its 10th anniversary this week. Let’s hope Fabio Capello’s England can do something similar against Bulgaria…

So, the Premiership is underway and, after only one week, we’ve already seen Manchester City give Swansea a stuffing, Stoke showing Chelsea they’re more than just a one-season wonder and Joey Barton continuing to live up to his Twitter reputation.

We hope you’re enjoying it as much as we are and are getting out to support your local team (if you’re a stay-at-home supporter you should check out our Tips For Watching Sport The Green Way). This week we’ve got a heap more cool and exciting things to keep you entertained on the way to the big game. But remember, if you’re driving to the games you’re missing out on all the good stuff, so get on board and Do It In Public instead…

Although Joey Barton provides us with enough material to base this entire feature on him from now until the end of the season, it’s only fair that we give some of the other footballing Tweeters a shout. Cesc Fabregas has been keeping everyone on his side, tweeting his gratitude to the Arsenal fans after his move to Barcelona, and Sergio Aguero tweeted his gratitude after (to use a Richard Keysism) smashing it on his debut for Manchester City. But Jack Wilshere is our tweeting hero this week for picking fights with Barton via the cyber playground.

Books
It’s pretty difficult to get stuck into a good page-turner when you’re behind the wheel, not to mention wholly unsafe, but when you’re cruising on the bus or train there’s nothing better. This week Theo Walcott is treating the world to his new book, and whilst Fabio Capello might be in rage over it, we reckon it’ll pass a few pre match hours, even if Charles Dickens it ain’t. Growing Up Fast is out now.

Apps/Games
If you’re like us (and we like to think you are) you’ll always set off with the grand intentions of broadening your horizons and devouring book after book, when in reality you end up pinging an angry bird in the direction of a poor defenceless pig. Good on you we say, and that’s why we keep our eyes on the hottest downloads out there for you. One we’re particularly fond of is the Sky Go app. If you’re ever lefted tearing your hair out trying to choose which game to go to, now you don’t have to! Sky Go lets you watch games on your iPhone or iPad wherever you are (just not in the car!).
