Athens to Thessaloniki
The fast InterCity trains on this route now take only four and a half hours, but they still travel through a tortuous and amazingly scenic mountain section south of Larissa, ascending a dramatic escarpment than heading through deep valleys over great steel viaducts, several of which were famously blown up by partisans and British agents during World War II.
Further north, the train passes right by Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the Greek gods.
