Christmas is just around the corner, so we’re bringing you the best festive Traincations each week to get you in the mood…
What’s all the fuss?
The quaint streets and adorable houses of Tønder are already lit up for Christmas celebrations and you can join in the festivities too. From mid-November until the end of December, this entire Danish town is decorated and covered in pretty lights. The square in the town centre is filled with little Christmas cabins, selling tasty Danish snacks and seasonal specialities. And make sure you don’t miss Denmark’s most famous Christmas House (pictured), where you might just get to meet Santa if you’re lucky.
Getting there
Take a late afternoon Eurostar from London to Paris, leaving enough time for the ten minute walk from Gare du Nord to Gare de l’Est. Travel from Paris to Hamburg on the City Night Line sleeper train, which leaves Paris each day at 8:20pm and rolls into Hamburg Hauptbahnhof around 8.30am the following day. The sleeper train has one, two or three bed carriages with a washbasin, which are the best option for this journey. From Hamburg, there are two train lines towards Jutland, one via Padborg and the other via Tønder. For help with booking or fares check out the Loco2 website.
