This week’s Traincation is brought to you by Snowcarbon…
What’s all the fuss?
You can’t aim higher than Val Thorens, for one of the best skiing experiences around. At 2,300 metres, it’s the highest ski village in the Alps (so you’re pretty much guaranteed to get snow too). For the brave, one of the best runs is the long, cruisey, blue route from Mont de Peclet, which has a 700m vertical decent! If that idea leaves you fearing for your life, you can hop on the toboggan run beneath the Peclet glacier instead- the longest toboggan run in Europe. And at the end of the day, the recently opened Folie Douce is the place to head for, with MCs and DJs belting out tunes on its sunny terrace.
Getting there
A daytime journey to Val Thorens on the train is a great way to see all the sights. Your first option is to take the 10:00 Eurostar Direct Ski Train, arriving at Moutiers at 18:13. Alternatively, you can take the 07:31 Eurostar from London to Paris Gare du Nord, cross by RER to Gare de Lyon and then catch the 12:19 TGV down to Moutiers, arriving 16:34. There’s time to have lunch at one of the many restaurants at Gare de Lyon, or take your own picnic onto the TGV. It also usually costs less than the direct train too. Check out booking information on the Snowcarbon website.
Once you arrive at Moutiers station, there are buses all the way up to the resort. If you need more information on times or bookings visit Loco2 or Rail Europe.
