How to get the ‘ultimate high’ in Rotterdam

Here’s a great reason to follow in Scott Mills’ footsteps and take a Traincation to the Netherlands.

Back in 2006 an abandoned building in Rotterdam was reopened after two years as a nightclub. The building was renamed Club WATT and is now the world’s first self-powered nightclub.

What makes this club different is the dance floor. When clubbers dance, the floor lights up. But this isn’t just your average 70s dance floor, the movement on the dance floor is converted into electricity. The harder they dance, the more the floor lights up and the better the experience.

Not that anybody needs encouraging to dance on a night out, but the Sustainable Dance Floor has an energy meter which clubbers can watch to see how much harder they have to dance to have the “ultimate high.”

The club was developed by Dutch entrepreneurs Enviu and Doll and the Sustainable Dance Floor has since been used at Brazil Carnival and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, as well as in Barcelona, Miami and Toulouse.
